Two days is the sweet spot for a first visit to Varanasi. It is enough to see the essentials, eat well and still have time to simply sit on a ghat and watch life go by.
Day 1 — The River and the Old City
5:00 AM · Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat. Start with the dawn aarti, classical music and yoga on the steps.
5:45 AM · Sunrise boat ride. Float north along the ghats as pilgrims bathe and the city glows gold. This is the most photogenic hour of the day.
7:30 AM · Kachori-sabzi and jalebi breakfast in the lanes near the ghats.
9:00 AM · Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Enter via the new Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor. Leave your phone and bags at the locker counters — they are not allowed inside. Then visit Annapurna Devi temple next door.
12:00 PM · Lassi break and rest at your hotel — the afternoon heat is real for most of the year.
4:00 PM · Walk the ghats from Assi towards Dashashwamedh: Tulsi Ghat, Chet Singh Ghat, Harishchandra Ghat, Kedar Ghat and the colourful Darbhanga Ghat.
6:00 PM · Ganga Aarti — ideally from a boat. See our complete Ganga Aarti guide.
8:00 PM · Dinner — try a thali or the famous Banarasi chaat.
Day 2 — Sarnath, Silk and Street Food
8:30 AM · Drive to Sarnath (about 30–40 minutes). Visit the Dhamek Stupa, the excavated monastery ruins, the Archaeological Museum with the Ashoka Lion Capital and the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar.
1:00 PM · Lunch back in the city.
3:00 PM · Banarasi silk weavers. Visit a weaving family to see handlooms at work. There is no pressure to buy — but it is hard to resist.
5:30 PM · Street food walk. Tamatar chaat, golgappe, kachori, malaiyo in winter, and finish with a Banarasi paan. Our Banaras Street Food Walk covers 8+ tastings.
8:30 PM · Final evening on the ghats. Sit quietly at Assi or Kedar Ghat and watch the diyas drift away.
Got a third day?
Add a day trip to Prayagraj for the Triveni Sangam, or spend a slow day exploring BHU, the Bharat Kala Bhavan museum and Ramnagar Fort across the river.
