Kashi Vishwanath Temple Darshan Guide: Corridor, Rules and Tips

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the spiritual centre of Varanasi. Since the opening of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham corridor, the temple is connected directly to the Ganga at Lalita and Manikarnika ghats — making the walk from the river to the temple a grand experience.

Before you go

  • Phones, cameras, bags, belts and leather items are not allowed inside. Free/paid lockers are available near the entry gates.
  • Dress modestly. Traditional wear is appreciated.
  • Carry a small offering if you wish — flowers, bel patra and milk are sold outside.
  • Expect security checks at every entry.

Best time for darshan

  • Early morning (after the Mangala Aarti) and late morning on weekdays are usually the calmest.
  • Mondays, Sawan month, Mahashivratri and festival days are extremely crowded — queues can take several hours.

Temple timings and aarti schedules change for festivals, so always check the official temple information before you go.

The corridor walk

From the Ganga side, you climb from the ghat into a wide open courtyard with views of the golden spire. The complex also houses smaller shrines, a museum and rest areas. Spend some time here after darshan — it is beautiful in the evening light.

Nearby temples to visit

  • Annapurna Devi Temple — goddess of food, right next door.
  • Kaal Bhairav Temple — the "kotwal" (guardian) of Kashi; locals say your visit is complete only after his darshan.
  • Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple — founded by Goswami Tulsidas.
  • Durga Kund and Tulsi Manas Mandir.

Go with a local guide

A local guide helps with lockers, the right gate, temple etiquette and the stories behind each shrine — so you can focus on the darshan. See our Kashi Vishwanath & Old City Heritage Walk.
